Liverpool defender to replace departing United target.
Manchester United are closing in on the £20m signing of German World Cup winner Mats Hummels, with Borussia Dortmund set to replace him with Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Red Devils have been keen to strengthen defensively this summer, with Hummels long thought to be one of their top priority targets in that position, and it is now thought that a deal is close to being finalised between the two clubs.
The 25-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the game at the moment and would make a fine addition at Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal eyes replacements for Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and it could be that they will owe a big thanks to their arch rivals Liverpool for helping to push the move through.
The Reds seem content to allow youngster Ilori to move on loan to Dortmund for the upcoming 2014/15 season, with the Portuguese starlet eyed by Jurgen Klopp as the ideal replacement for Hummels.
Although Ilori has not been a regular since signing for Liverpool from Sporting Lisbon last summer, Dortmund would be happy to let Hummels go if they were able to bring him in in his place.
