Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino wants his new club to become the first to take advantage of the new method of qualification for Champions League football – winning the Europea League.
The Argentine boss is determined to return the North London club to Europe’s premier level of competition, and is willing to use a unique method to guarantee his team’s inclusion in the 2015-16 draw.
Reports in the Daily Mail explain that Spurs, who kick-off their European campaign against AEL Limassol later tonight, are targeting success in this year’s competition, with the champions awarded a place in the following season’s Champions League for the first time ever.
Pochettino has had a complete change of heart by insisting he will embark on the first European campaign of his managerial career with a view to winning the competition.
Unsurprisingly he likes the incentive of the invite to the Champions League that comes with the trophy and it will be interesting to see to what extent Tottenham’s priorities change after the New Year, if they are off the pace in the Barclays Premier League but still in the Europa League.
“It’s not a competition that’s attractive to me,” Pochettino had said in February, while in charge at Southampton. “I don’t see the appeal. It’s for teams not good enough to be playing with the best.”
