Southampton boss Ronald Koeman will make a move for Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld according to the Daily Star.

The adaptable Belgian international moved to the Vicente Calderon last summer but has struggled to secure a regular run out in Diego Simeone’s starting eleven and has been heavily linked with a possible summer exit.

Arsenal and AS Monaco are both interested in the 25 year old, who can play at right back and in the centre of the defence, but Koeman hopes to lure Alderweireld to St Mary’s with the promise of regular action.

Koeman could certainly do with some defensive reinforcements having seen Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren move to Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool respectively.

Prior to his move to Spain Alderweireld spent nine years at Ajax, making his way through the club’s famed academy to the Amsterdam outfit’s first team set-up and helping the Dutch giants to three Eredivisie titles and is certainly not accustomed to life on the bench.

Marc Wilmots’ used the Atletico Madrid man in a prominent role at the 2014 World Cup finals.
