Defoe is currently on the books of MLS outfit Toronto FC, whom he signed for during the January transfer window, but is now looking to leave after they sacked coach Ryan Nelsen on Sunday evening.

The 31-year-old reportedly flew back to England after hearing of Nelsen’s sacking, and now reports in the United States are claiming that Arsenal are now firmly in the race alongside QPR to land his signature.

Toronto are valuing the former England star at around £6m, and though QPR are said to be leading the race, Arsenal have not given up on persuading him to move to the Emirates.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for him in the past, and now Arsene Wenger is still keen to pull off a deal before Monday night’s transfer deadline as he still seeks a replacement for the injured Olivier Giroud.
