According to the Daily Mirror, TV pundit Redknapp, now a Sky expert, launched a savage attack on Wilshere last month claiming he is no longer guaranteed a place in Arsenal’s line-up.

Redknapp had said of Wilshere: “I can’t see him getting a game at the moment. Jack Wilshere’s problem is Jack Wilshere. He’s not performing. He’s got to take games by the scruff of the neck like two years ago, there’s no excuses anymore.”

The England international then hit back at the “reckless and aggressive” criticism, saying: “With all due respect, I think Redknapp should have some sympathy and understanding.

“It’s easy for someone to go on television and say: ‘He should be doing this, he should be doing that’. But, if you look back, he was injured just as much as I was. Maybe more than I was.”

Redknapp’s career was indeed blighted by injury, with the former Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton midfielder managing more than 30 games in a league season on just three occasions.

In comparison, Wilshere has made just 49 Premier League appearances over the past three seasons, but was able to participate in a full pre-season programme this summer, and has made a fairly promising start to the new season.

Wilshere also criticised former Manchester United star Paul Scholes, but praised England coach Gary Neville and BBC pundit Robbie Savage for their support.
