Vlaar is now entered the final year of his deal in the West Midlands, and the club are desperate to keep hold of him beyond next summer.

The club have recently tied down the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Alan Hutton and manger Paul Lambert to new deals over the past ten days.

Manchester United have also been keeping tabs on him, in the absence of any serious negotiations about fresh terms at Villa Park.

Vlaar impressed under Van Gaal at the World Cup this summer and the manager is keen for a reunion as the club struggle to keep things tight in defence.

However, they could suffer a blow as Vlaar, who is settled in the Midlands, has hinted that he is ready to being talks over staying put.
