The Premier League champions could do with new additions in that part of the pitch, with Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov arguably weak points in Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

City are ready to pay big money for Alba, who has been widely regarded as one of the best in the world in his position for some time, and who was also targeted by Manchester United in the summer transfer window, before they instead opted to sign Luke Shaw from Southampton.

Alba, 25, has been at Barcelona since 2012 having initially impressed in La Liga with Valencia, and he has gone on to make 76 appearances for the Catalan giants, scoring five goals from the back.

It is thought that Barca could be tempted to make some changes to their squad under new manager Luis Enrique, who offloaded big names such as Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez this summer, and who may also consider high enough offers for Alba if they come in.

This will come as a boost for City as they look to strengthen defensively in January, with Pellegrini recently admitting his side’s record at the back could improve.
