The Sky Blues have not reached the A-League grand final since 2010, while their crosstown rivals have featured in the last two as well as reaching the Asian Champions League final.

“It’s great for the A-League what the Wanderers have done by reaching the (ACL) final,” Arnold told AAP.

“That makes them the team to beat, but for me Sydney FC, along with Melbourne Victory are the biggest clubs in the country.

“We have the second-biggest support, an average of 19,000. The Wanderers had 14,000 last year, so there is a bit of a misconception there.”

Sydney FC take on the visiting Melbourne City on Saturday at Allianz Stadium, while the Wanderers fly to Melbourne to face the Victory in front of an expected 40,000 crowd at Etihad Stadium in the opening weekend of the A-League season.
