The veteran forward is set to link up with MLS side New York City FC next season after a spell on loan in Australia with Melbourne City, but he could follow in the footsteps of Frank Lampard and have a spell at the Etihad Stadium first, according to the Metro.

The 33-year-old has looked past his peak at the top level for some time now, losing his place at Barca before playing a bit-part role in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga title win and run to the Champions League final last season.

Still, with City in need of more options up front, Manuel Pellegrini could do well to make this short-term signing to provide an upgrade on struggling stars Edin Dzeko, Wilfried Bony and Stevan Jovetic.
