Scholes: Pique would struggle in the Premier League…

Paul Scholes has controversially claimed that Barcelona centre back Gerard Pique would struggle with life in the Premier League, and has urged former club Manchester United not to sign the Spaniard.

Reports on Goal.com explain that the Barcelona star is considering his future at Camp Nou amid speculation linking him with a return to Old Trafford, but his former team-mate thinks he should stay in Spain.

Scholes recently insisted that Pique is more suited to La Liga than the Premier League, with the player’s fondness for having the ball meaning he is always more likely to shine in Spain than England.

Pique has been left out of the Blaugrana’s last three matches by Luis Enrique, and will seek a move away in January unless the situation improves.

The Spaniard’s situation – combined with United’s chronic lack of quality options in defence – has prompted several reports suggesting he could be set to return to the club he departed in the summer of 2008.

However, Scholes urged against the link, telling reporters: “I have always thought that Spanish football, and Barcelona in particular, suits him best. He likes being in a side that keeps possession.

“He is great at home but playing away at the big teams in England is a completely different prospect for a defender. His success at Barcelona and with Spain has been incredible. But I think Gerard would find it harder back in the Premier League.”
