Three Lions chief gives current number one something to think about.

England boss Roy Hodgson has told Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart that he will now have to play at the top of his game for the foreseeable future as his rivals are now at a level where they could quite easily take his place, according to the Daily Mirror.

Hodgson admitted he kept faith with Hart when he was dropped by Manchester City last term for lack of a real alternative.

And though Hart has won back the faith of his fans for club and country, Hodgson has warned that the likes of Fraser Forster and Ben Foster are now keeping him on his toes.

“When Joe was under his severest criticism, Ben and Fraser weren’t at the level of form they are now.

“I try to divorce form from quality. I’ve always believed in Joe’s quality,” Hodgson said.

“There was a time when he was suffering from a lack of form and people suggested he might not keep his place but he never showed anything that would have led to me questioning him.

“These situations test the players out more than the coach. As a coach, it’s good if you know who your best players are.

“If you start a season knowing who is your best goalkeeper and then alternate them you can put yourself in a difficult position.

“A goalkeeper can make a mistake in any game and if you replace him on the first mistake, you can make a rod for your own back with the second player.

“But if you think you are going to drop a guy and play someone else, you have to go with that other player for some time. There are so few international games.”
