The 28-year-old has been in fine form for the Portuguese club this season, already scoring 15 goals in the campaign. As a result both Spurs and their Merseyside rivals are interested in signing him to help with their respective striking problems.

The North London club have had to make do with the misfiring forwards Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado, as well as youngster Harry Kane for this season. A top class striker could completely rejuvenate their side.

On the other hand, the Reds have been struggling since the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. With Daniel Sturridge injured and the signing of Mario Balotelli seeming more and more like a mistake, they could well be in the market for a goalscorer in the January transfer window.

Martinez would be a great addition for either side, but it would seem that the London based one is putting in more of an effort at the moment.
