The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the 25-year-old in recent times and rather than denying the rumours van Gaal has simply said he only discusses transfer with the Old Trafford hierarchy.

“I cannot discuss that with you. I discuss that with my CEO and not with anyone of the media,” the Dutchman said.

Whilst this does not necessarily mean the 63-year-old is looking to sign Bale, there is no doubting that the Welshman would be a great addition to his United squad and the club have tried to sign the attacker in the past.

In fact before the Wales international completed his world record £85.3m switch to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2013, Man United also tried to secure the forward.

Bale has since impressed in Madrid and helped Los Blancos to Copa del Rey and Champions League triumphs last season, scoring goals in both finals.

Since arriving in the Spanish capital the Southampton youth product has played 66 times in all competitions and scored an impressive 33 goals, despite generally operating from the wing.
