City have been forced to play the majority of their games in December without a recognised striker as both Dzeko and Sergio Aguero have been sidelined through injury, meaning James Milner has been forced to take up a ‘false nine role’.

Aguero is expected to remain out until the end of next month with damaged ankle ligaments, while Dzeko has been out with a calf problem.

However, The Bosnian international is expected to return to full training next week with the January 10 game against Everton penciled in as his comeback date.

The news will be most welcome for manager Manuel Pellegrini, who is looking to close the gap on current leaders Chelsea even further.

Dzeko hasn’t featured since December 10, when Pellegrini’s men won 2-0 at AS Roma to secure a place in the Champions League knockout stages.

And with Stevan Jovetic still dogged by thigh problems, Pellegrini is desperate to see his attack carry significantly more muscle.
