The Gunners are close to finalising deals for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, as well as St Etienne defender Loic Perrin. Both players are extremely versatile, and both can play centre-back as well as defensive midfield.
A dominant defensive midfielder is something the North London club have been missing for years now, with Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini not quite making the grade. Carvalho could be exactly the kind of player Arsenal need, a midfield destroyer capable of breaking up play and doing the dirty work in the centre of the park.
Having struggled in the Premier League during the first half of the season, the Gunners are currently sixth in the table. A number of defensive injuries have forced Wenger to field a make shift back four at times, something the introduction of Perrin would go a long way to solving.
