Van Gaal has seen his side’s back-line stretched this season due to poor form and a run of injuries, this has led at times to the Dutchman having to throw youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair in at the deep end.

With that in mind the Old Trafford manager is tracking Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin, Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar and PSG youngster Marquinhos.

Of the four named by this source one would imagine that 29 year old Dutchman Vlaar would be the most likely January target as the experienced centre-back is out of contract in the summer and as such could be available ‘on the cheap’ in preference to the player leaving on a free transfer in the summer.

Louis van Gaal spent vast sums over the summer but may once again have to dig deep in order to improve his squad and with a top four finish key there is every chance that Man United’s owners will give funds to the manager this month.
