The Daily Star claims that a source at the Merseyside club is convinced the switch will go through without a hitch and the Reds have successfully shaken off the Gunners in the race for his summer signature.

Contract rebel Milner does not appear any closer to putting pen to paper at the Etihad Stadium and, with just a matter of weeks remaining on his lucrative deal, all the signals are pointing towards the England international departing.

He was a second-half substitute in the Blues’ narrow 3-2 victory over Aston Villa today and has been in and out of Manuel Pellegrini’s side this term – an issue which is thought to have frustrated Milner.

His exit would represent a blow for the champions ahead of the summer transfer window, as they are believed to be keen to increase the number of English players on the books, a task which will be made harder by Milner leaving.

For Liverpool, prising a player away from a rival for free will likely be seen as something of a coup.
