Arsene Wenger outlines summer central defensive plans

Bad news for Arsenal fans, as Arsene Wenger has voiced his happiness over Arsenal’s current options in central-defence, and therefore won’t be in the summer transfer market for any new additions to the defensive position.

Arsenal had been linked to Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels, but Wenger’s latest comments suggest the reports were little more than mere speculation.

Manchester United, therefore, now look set to land the £28.5m-rated Germany international in the summer ahead without competition from their English rivals.

Speaking ahead of the Gunners’ Premier League clash with Swansea City on Monday night, the Frenchman revealed central defence is the one position that doesn’t need revamping at the end of the season.

The 65-year-old said, “Four is enough. (Matieu) Debuchy can play there, (Nacho) Monreal can play there, so you can say we are not out to buy a central defender,” as quoted by the Daily Express.

Arsenal have been in superb form in the second-half of the season, and are poised to finish the campaign as runners-up to Chelsea – proving that they possess the quality to challenge for the top position.

However, few can doubt that Wenger’s side still feels far from complete – a distant cry from Jose Mourinho’s formidable Blues team – and may still be some way off a domestic title.
