The Welshman has struggled to replicate the form of his debut season in Spain when he scored vital goals in both Champions League and Copa Del Rey finals as Madrid clinched the double last year.

He came in for more criticism from section of Los Blancos supporters in the aftermath of their European semi-final exit to Serie A champions Juventus on Wednesday night, which has increased speculation that he could depart the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Rumours in The Independent on Thursday morning suggested that a deal for Bale to join Manchester United in the summer was close and Carragher believes the winger should quit Spanish football for the sake of his career:

“He should return to the Barclays Premier League this summer.” The former Kop defender wrote in his Mail Online column.

“He would not be taking the easy way out. Who benefits from him being unhappy?

“A move home would make sense on a number of levels, not least as while Cristiano Ronaldo is there, scoring a goal per game and dominating the agenda, Bale – no matter what he does, not even after a debut campaign that included 22 goals and 17 assists – is in a fight he will struggle to win.” he claimed.
