Goal.com reports on claims made by the Ghanaian international and originally cited by Metro TV.

The former Sunderland man is quoted as stating emphatically;

“I heard it this week that he (Mikel) has agreed terms with Al Ain and will most definitely be playing for us next season,”

“it’s great news for us because Mikel Obi is a very good player and very experienced.

“It will be exciting playing with him in the same team, because I believe both of us, with the help of our other colleagues, can do more for the club.” Gyan added.

28-year-old Nigerian Mikel has been something of a bit-part player at Chelsea in recent seasons and his possible departure from Stamford Bridge isn’t a huge surprise though any decision to not move to a side in one of Europe’s ‘Big’ leagues is perhaps earlier than one would usually expect.

Mikel has spent nine seasons at Chelsea and last term’s tally of just six Premier League starts is the lowest of his Blues career to date.

Jose Mourinho used Nemanja Matic as his first choice defensive midfielder in 2014/15 and the Serbian’s displays certainly indicate that the Chelsea manager made the right decision.

Mikel has made 333 appearances for Chelsea.
