Man United stars Rooney and Smalling delighted with victory over Spurs despite performance

Manchester United got the 2015-16 campaign off to a perfect start after sealing three points against Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s early Premier League kick off at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney helped seal the result in this afternoon’s clash, as it was his effort on goal that saw Spurs right-back Kyle Walker send the ball into the back of his own net.

It wasn’t the best of performances from Louis van Gaal’s side, with just one shot mustered on target all game, but Rooney isn’t fazed by their display.

“Today was all about the three points. Pre-season was relatively short compared to previous ones. We’re still working. It was a big victory for us today,” he told BBC Sport.

Defender Chris Smalling also voiced his happiness, “It was good to get that clean sheet. At times we didn’t play well today, but we dug in at the end and it was an important three points. It was important we got off to a good start.”

The Red Devils have made five major signings this summer, with new goalkeeper Sergio Romero controversially replacing David De Gea in between the posts, and today’s showing suggests that the Premier League giants revamped team may take some time to gel.
