As far as games go, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has certainly had better nights. Having come off the bench against Championship side Middlesbrough, the 30-year-old was unable to effect the game and provide a spark to get into the next round of the cup.
Clearly in a slump, Rooney not only failed to ignite his team, but sealed their exit by missing United’s first penalty in a short shootout.
And it seems that Red Devils fans are short on sympathy at the moment, as a number of them took to Twitter to beg manager Louis van Gaal to move him on before he embarrasses himself.
Are they being harsh, or so they make a strong case?
Wayne rooney OUT, Ashley Young OUT, Carrick OUT, Romero OUT! Absolute shambles! The amount of money being thrown at them is sickening!!!

Rooney, Carrick, Young, Romero are finished at this club. They're deadwood now

Imagine the fans thinking Romero was going to be the problem. Shout out Rooney.

I know it's dead easy to make Rooney the scapegoat, but is it a bit like Torres/Shevchenko where it's not just poor form and he's lost it?

If Rooney starts on Saturday – which he probably will – I fully expect a riot.
