Arsenal boss admits Gunners goal hero wanted to leave this summer

Joel Campbell scored his first goal for Arsenal in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Swansea City.

The Costa Rica international looked delighted as he celebrated opening his account for the Gunners, but, according to manager Arsene Wenger, Campbell was much less happy this summer.

Wenger told reporters that Campbell was keen to leave Emirates Stadium during preseason.

“I think he wanted to go because he didn’t play, which you can understand and as well because he didn’t play at all,” Wenger explained.

“Sometimes people want you to buy more and more players but after a while you have to look at your own players.”

Campbell signed for Arsenal in August 2011, before being loaned out to Lorient, Olympiakos, Real Betis and Villarreal.

To date, he has started six senior games for the Gunners, including just one in the Premier League.
