Man Utd team news: Wayne Rooney demoted to Europa League duty says Jose Mourinho

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has stated that Wayne Rooney has been demoted to Europa League duty, according to The Sun.

The England international was controversially left on the bench today however, the decision proved to be correct as United recorded a 4-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Before the game, Mourinho claimed that Rooney was dropped for United’s clash with champions Leicester, in order to rest him for next weeks encounter with Zorya Luhansk.

“Fresh people are needed as we play another match on Thursday against Zorya Luhansk – if Rooney doesn’t play today, it means he plays the next one,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by the Sun.

United put a stop to a two game losing streak in the league which included defeats at the hands of rivals Manchester City and against Watford FC last weekend.

The Red Devils take on Zorya in the Europa League next week before hosting Stoke City at Old Trafford next weekend.

Rooney has provided three assists and scored one goal in eight appearances for United this season.
