Newcastle want 27-yr-old defender with 13 goal contributions

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing the Benfica defender Alejandro Grimaldo.

According to a report from Football Insider, the 27-year-old left-back is on the radar of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Real Madrid, and Leeds United as well.

The Spaniard will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season with his contract expiring in the summer.

Newcastle are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and Grimaldo could prove to be a quality acquisition.

Eddie Howe has had to field Dan Burn as his makeshift left-back this season and the Newcastle manager should look to bring in a more specialist player for that role. While Burn has been impressive defensively, he offers very little going forward.

On the other hand, Grimaldo is exceptional going forward and the 27-year-old has contributed to 5 goals and 8 assists across all competitions this season. The Spaniard could add a new dimension to the New Castle attack and help them improve further.

Newcastle are well placed to secure Champions League qualification and they should be able to attract players like Grimaldo if they manage to finish in the top four. Furthermore, they are one of the richest clubs in the world with an ambitious project at their disposal. The 27-year-old Benfica defender is likely to be tempted to join them in the summer.

The Magpies are certainly are more attractive option compared to the likes of Wolves and Leeds. However, if Real Madrid decide to pursue the defender actively, the Spaniard could have his head turned.
