Are we witnessing the beginning of something special at the Stadium of Light? After all, Sunderland were expected to struggle again this season, albeit not as much as last term when they regularly fought to keep theirs heads above water. After a 2-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday, one of their players isn’t just daring to dream, but making confident assertions regarding how they will perform this campaign. This guy isn’t known for his modesty… [Read the rest of this entry »]
Goodness me, aren’t Sunderland being busy bees in the transfer market this summer? While the likes of Everton and Newcastle struggle to rub two pennies together, the Black Cats laugh in the face of the credit crunch by showing off a suitcase bulging with notes and thrusting it into the face of all and sundry. Come on Djibril Cissé. Stop the circus, will you? Oh, you have? Thank you very much.
Goal.com reports that the disgruntled Olympique Marseille striker has finally decided to stay at the Marseille Velodrome for until the end of the season. This after toying with the idea of moving back to the English Premier League for weeks.
Well, it is not exactly clear why the former Auxerre and Liverpool striker underwent a change of heart after publicly declaring that he wants to move out of Marseille But maybe this quote from L’Equipe might help:
I am still here. I think that I will be here until the end of the season. I am on five, so 15 remain and it is feasible. I believe in it in any case.
Let’s see Cisse, if you can score 15 goals in the second half of the season. Do not worry; we shall get back to you when it’s May.
Manchester City might have plenty of cash to splash out with in the January transfer market but manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is gradually realising that money doesn’t always buy you the players that he want. Just ask Olympique Marseille president Pape Doiuf, who has rejected a bid from the Premier League side for Djibril Cisse.
ESPN Soccernet reports that Diouf has asked City to look elsewhere for a striker since Cisse is not available for sale at present. He said:
”He is wanted, that is for sure. I myself have been approached by Manchester City (about Cisse) but I turned it down categorically. I want to be clear – Djibril Cisse will not leave. He will stay at OM until the end of the season.
”I have never doubted his abilities, his qualities. He got through difficulties last year and I have no doubt that he will get out of them again this season. With everything that he has had to endure, read, see and hear, I understand that it piles the pressure on him to leave, having been contacted by an English club that is among the leading teams in their league. But when he and myself discussed this, he understood my position – he understood that I will not let him leave and he has no problem with me.”
Cisse has started just two matches in French Ligue 1 for Marseille this season and has been replaced by Mamadou Niang as the main starting striker. But a lifeline could have just opened for Cisse with the African Nations’ Cup as Niang has flown out to play for Senegal in the competition. That should guarantee Cisse some healthy first-team football for the time being at least.
As for Man City, their search for a striker continues. Sven-Goran Erikkson is doing all he can to recruit a decent top class striker from mainland Europe with his charm and reputation but it appears that Marseille are not one for the taking.
Now this is one hot transfer speculation that you wouldn’t like to miss and the best part of the tale is that this could well be true. Remember Djibril Cisse, the French striker who failed to settle at Liverpool even after sticking to the Merseyside club for two years? Well, he is reported to be on his way back to the English premier League although not to Anfield.
French newspaper L’Equipe has reported that talks are already underway between the player and his current club Olympique Marseille over offers from interested clubs. Sky Sports has picked up the thread from there and names a number of Premiership clubs among the potential fishermen who would like to get this particular talented but somewhat cagey fish.
Cisse’s time at Liverpool was saddled with injuries and although he briefly restored his goal scoring prowess at Marseille last season, this season has been another disappointing and dry one. The French international striker has scored just 2 goals in French Ligue 1 so far this season and is stated to be unhappy at the Marseille Velodrome and disinclined to see out the remaining four-and-a-half years of his contract with the French club.
A host of premiership clubs are apparently eager to get the signature of Cisse with Manchester City emerging as the mostly likely contender. City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is looking forward to adding another striker to his side and being a long time admirer of Djibril Cisse, he would certainly lash out the considerable amount of money now that Cisse is certain to leave Marseille.
Struggling Bolton Wanderers too have expressed interest in signing the player since they might be robbed off their start striker Nicolas Anelka by Chelsea this month. Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United too have penned their desires for Cisse.
But is Cisse all this hype and transfer speculation? To say that he was an utter failure at Liverpool would be naïve but he wasn’t a success either. That Cisse has quality is of no doubt but has Cisse got the temperament to succeed in the Premiership?
