It’s unclear as to whether Gareth Barry will be signing for Liverpool or not this summer, although there’s another tug-of-war taking place over goalkeeper Scott Carson going the other way. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Villa Park and is visibly frustrated at the £10million price tag that Rafael Benitez has slapped on his head. He previously had the following to say:
“It’s too much. It’s stupid money really.
“It may be time to move but I don’t know if anyone will agree a fee.”
He added: “I don’t think Liverpool are stupid. They know what I’m worth.
“They would’ve recouped what they paid for me in loan fees over the last couple of years, so hopefully they can help me out.”
However, the Liverpool Echo report that Benitez is in a typically defiant mood. His recent spat with Martin O’Neill over Barry can hardly have served to have helped Carson’s cause, although if the midfielder were to join Liverpool, it’s possible that a deal can be facilitated for the goalkeeper.
“It is a matter between the clubs,” he said. “We agreed the fee with Aston Villa last year.
“The fee has been there for one season so to talk about the fee now is not correct.
“We agreed with Martin O’Neill and that was the situation.”
Will Aston Villa stump up the cash required to bring Carson to the club on a permanent basis. Considering he has a long career ahead of him, maybe £10million isn’t that much after all.
