Rafa wants money and he wants it now! According to this source, he has earmarked another six players to offload to help fund some big name signings before the new season kicks off.
Benitez has not given up on Barry, but having set aside £20million for Robbie Keane, he does not have enough to meet Villa’s £18m asking price.
Benitez has slapped the same price tag on Inter Milan and Arsenal target Alonso.
After selling Scott Carson to West Brom for £3.25m, Benitez also wants rid of Jermaine Pennant, Yossi Benayoun, Andriy Voronin, Sebestian Leto and Steve Finnan.
Voronin looks to be heading back to the Bundesliga for £3m, while Spurs have made an approach for Benayoun. (News of the World)
Having already sold John Arne Riise, Peter Crouch and Scott Carson, Rafa is still looking to beef up his cash reserves to help push for big name signings, most prominent being Gareth Barry. The Spaniard’s desire to rid his squad of some deadwood makes sense and, whilst it is right to sell off the likes of Voronin and Pennant, the other players linked with a move could be a bit excessive.
Steve Finnan is clearly getting on a bit, but he can still do a good job as squad cover, as can Yossi Benayoun who has been in good form in the pre-season friendlies. Argentine wide man Leto has been rumoured to be surplus to requirements, but he could still be a useful youngster to hold on to. Finally Xabi Alonso is one player Benitez really should keep hold of, quite frankly I think he is a better option than Gareth Barry. Who of these six do Liverpool fans think they should keep hold of?
