Great news for Wembley lovers and disappointment for Arsenal fans. Come 2011 the historic stadium will host arguably the biggest club match in the world – the UEFA Champions League final.
UEFA have decided to award the European showpiece hosting rights to Wembley after the government backed the move.
Yet this doesn’t come cheap, especially for Arsenal. The north London club had been hoping to host the UEFA Cup final in 2011 but now they will have to forego their ambition as it is against UEFA rules that the same nation host both major finals. So the Gunners will now try to get the final another year.
But one city’s loss is another’s gain and it has been reported that Lansdowne Road in Dublin will now host the UEFA Cup final in 2011.
