A few months ago, it appeared as though this player was going to leave Old Trafford, with the bookmakers going odds-on that he’d be plying his trade for Real Madrid this season. The Spanish champions seemed confident of getting their man, but they hadn’t banked on this man’s powers of persuasion!
The Guardian reports that Cristiano Ronaldo is enjoying life at Manchester United and, in a rare act of humility, has cited Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the central reasons why he’s in line to scoop up every award going this autumn. The Portuguese forward has already picked up the FifPro World Player of the Year this week, although he might not still be playing for the Premier League champions if it wasn’t for his manager.
“Sir Alex has been the big inspiration to me,” he said. “I am here because of him. When he saw me playing for Sporting Lisbon against Manchester United he believed in me enough to buy me. I’ve learned many things from him and I’m continuing to learn. He is a great manager.
“Of course Sir Alex was the main factor for keeping me here but what happened in the summer is finished. My head is focused on the club. My focus is solely on playing well for Manchester United and winning the Premier League and Champions League again. The summer is finished. My head is always here in the club.
“If I smile it is because I smile. If I don’t, it’s because I don’t. People are always writing things about me. It is up to them; for me it is not a problem. I will just try to play well and do my best. I am just focused on playing good football.”
Ronaldo rubbed many Manchester United fans up the wrong way in the summer, due to his reluctance to commit to the club who had given him such a tremendous opportunity in the first place. However, supporters will be encouraged to hear the above words from one of their star players, with the Red Devils number seven set to become one of the club’s greatest legends if he sticks around for long enough.
