Stamford Bridge side line up move to bring in ‘Marquee’ striker signing.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is set to step up his interest in PSG forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic after discussions with the Blues technical team over potential summer transfer targets.
The Swedish international helped his Parc des Princes side to clinch their first domestic title in almost two decades but has subsequently been strongly linked with a summer move away from the French capital, a move that will become all the more probable if Carlo Ancelotti leaves his managerial post at PSG.
The Italian boss has requested to leave PSG though the club’s owners are reticent to allow Ancelotti to depart for Real Madrid but may struggle to keep hold of a manager who has so publicly stated his intention to leave.
CaughtOffside understands that Abramovich has discussed the possibility of a move for Ibrahamovic with Jose Mourinho, who is set to return to Stamford Bridge as a permanent successor to interim boss Rafa Benitez.
The Portuguese boss worked with Ibrahimovic at Inter Milan and though the pair enjoyed something of a tempestuous relationship Mourinho is very much interested in bringing the 31 year old to Chelsea.
The West London club are keenly keeping tabs on a number of prospective striker signings but may feel that Ibrahimovic is a good fit for the Premier League club.
Chelsea are thought to greatly value Belgian youngster Romelu Lukaku, who has enjoyed a very successful loan spell at West Brom, but feel that the powerful forward would benefit from another season gaining experience, probably at another Premier League side, and as such would prefer to look at any striker purchase as a more short term solution and as such Ibrahimovic’s age is not a factor they have to concern themselves with.
Ibrahimovic is in the best form of his career, his last season at AC Milan in 2011/12 yielding a career best total of 35 goals in all competitions and his debut season in France has seen the giant Malmo born forward score an astonishing 29 goals in 33 Ligue 1 appearances.
Having plied his trade in Holland, Italy, Spain and France Ibrahimovic may well be keen on a fresh challenge and the chance to pit himself in the English top tier could well be very tempting and Abramovich is ready to match the striker’s massive PSG pay packet and offer a hefty signing bonus to help sweeten any potential deal.
Spaniard Fernando Torres is likely to be sold this summer after a disappointing Premier League campaign and Ibrahimovic is the ‘Marquee’ signing Abramovich wants to bring in this summer to help appease a fanbase that will not have been enamoured with Chelsea’s displays this season.
Mourinho and Ibrahimovic’s previous shared experience, the 2008/09 season at the San Siro, was a stunning success with Inter Milan romping to a Serie A title and the Nerazzurri ace finishing as the top scorer. Roman Abramovich will hope that the pair can repeat the feat at Chelsea.
