City pair to earn new deals with the club.
Manchester City are keen to tie down defensive duo Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta to new contracts this summer, the club’s chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak has told City’s official site.
Before embarking on what is likely to be a busy summer in the transfer market, City have been making sure their star players commit their futures to the club, with Yaya Toure and David Silva both extending their deals recently.
“There are other players coming soon – Zabaleta, Micah Richards,” al-Mubarak said. “We’ll make sure these players stay part of the future at City because they are really the core of this team.
“As much as we need to continue to invest in this team we also need to invest in the core foundation of the team, which is these players.”
It had been thought that with Richards falling behind Zabaleta in the pecking order at the club, he could move on this summer after being targeted by both Arsenal and Liverpool.
However, Liverpool’s interest cooled when they signed Richards’ City team-mate Kolo Toure on a free transfer. Arsenal, though, are still looking for a new right-back due to the expected departure of Bacary Sagna to PSG this summer.
Richards has spent his entire career with City, and could now extend his stay after these latest developments. Despite falling out of favour with previous manager Roberto Mancini, he could be set to feature more under new boss Manuel Pellegrini.
