Veteran centre back Richard Dunne has appeared as a target for Scottish Champions Celtic this summer, Sky Sports reports.

The 33-year-old was let go by Aston Villa last week after failing to make a single appearance under Paul Lambert thanks to an injury he picked up whilst on international duty with the Republic of Ireland at last summer’s European Championships.

However, despite not stepping onto the pitch for Villa all season, he made his comeback last weekend when he came on as a substitute in the Republic of Ireland victory over Georgia.

And Celtic boss Neil Lennon has confirmed that he is interested in the former Manchester City man and could make a summer swoop to rescue him over the coming weeks after admitting that his experience would be invaluable to his team.

“We have made no formal or informal movements as yet,” said Lennon in the Daily Record.

“Richard has had injury problems and hasn’t played for a long time so I don’t know what kind of condition he is in.

“And the way we have been signing players over the years, he would fall out of that category, but he is a player I have known a long time and have always liked.

“We have also signed guys like Daniel Majstorovic before and it is always good to have one or two experienced players in.”
