With all the talk of Arsenal’s interest in big-name targets it appears that the North London club may also be setting their sights on pair of Liberty Stadium players, who could perhaps be more easily snapped up by Arsene Wenger this summer.
The Daily Mail claims that Spanish striker Michu is high up on his list of attacking targets and given the uncertainty about the future of Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup there is perhaps a decent chance the Gunners could lure the former Rayo Vallecano marksman to the Emirates Stadium.
The 27 year old had an excellent first season in the English top tier, scoring 22 goals and more than delivering on the £1.6m the South Wales side invested in his services.
With the likes of Wayne Rooney, Stevan Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain commonly linked with a move to join Arsenal it is perhaps more in keeping with Wenger’s cautious spendthrift transfer policy to opt for a move for Michu over advances for the Man United, Fiorentina and Real Madrid star’s, though one would imagine Swansea City would fight tooth and nail to keep their most effective attacking option.
Michu scored three goals against Arsenal in 2012/13.
Goal.com claim that Arsenal have already agreed terms with Swansea City centre-back Ashley Williams and that only discussions over the price-tag for the Welsh international standing in the way of a deal being completed.
The experienced 28 year old may well be considered a solid back-up option, one that Wenger may feel he needs given that Sebastien Squillaci has left the club and Johan Djourou appears likely to do likewise.
There has also been speculation that Thoams Vermaelen may be set to leave Arsenal, the captain having been frozen out of first team action for the final two months of the last campaign.
Wenger clearly sees Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his ideal first choice pairing and any new addition would have to bide their time and make do with run-outs in cup competitions before making any impact. A role that perhaps Williams is ready to consider.
