According to Italian news source Tuttosport, Napoli are looking to beat Arsenal to the signing of Lyon defensive midfielder Maxime Gonalons.
The 24-year-old has been an impressive performer for the French side, and was lined up as a possible replacement for Alex Song in Arsenal’s midfield, which is still lacking a natural defensive player.
The likes of Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey have been used in that position for the Gunners this season, though they are hoping to sign someone in that department this summer, with the likes of Mohamed Diame of West Ham and Etienne Capoue of Toulouse also being linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium.
However, Arsene Wenger may have to act fast if he hopes to land Gonalons, as Napoli are said to be stepping up their interest in the Frenchman, with new manager Rafael Benitez also keen to strengthen his team’s midfield this summer.
The likeso of Javier Mascherano of Barcelona and Lucas Leiva of Liverpool have both been linked with Napoli as well, but Gonalons may prove a more realistic target for the Italian side.
