Ajax’s highly rated defender Toby Alderweireld has rejected the chance to move to Norwich City this summer, Sky Sports reports.

Norwich agreed a fee with Ajax and hopes were high at Carrow Road that the Canaries could strengthen their defence with the highly rated Dutch defender.

However, the club couldn’t agree personal terms with Alderweireld and the players agent has rejected allegations that it was the Canaries standing within the game that prevented a move being completed.

“The problem was not that Norwich didn’t fit Toby’s ambitions, but we simply failed to agree terms,” Soren Lerby told Algemeen Dagblad.

Alderweireld has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with Liverpool thought to be interested in signing the defender, who only has one year remaining on his contract at Ajax.

The defender has said that if a move doesn’t materialise this summer, he will be more than happy to stay with Ajax.

The player has said that he is not desperate to leave the Dutch club and will only move away from Holland to be with a club that is a good fit for him.

German club Bayer Leverkusen are also understood to be in the running to sign Alderweireld.
