Romanian striker Ciprian Marica is a reported target for Arsenal, claims his agent, he told Romanian news source Libertatea.

The 27-year old forward, who is now a free agent, has been in contact with Arsenal as the Premier League club looks to add to their striking options. As current forward Olivier Giroud is linked with a move to Napoli, Marica’s agent, Giovani Becali, claims his client is nearing a move to Arsenal, in an interview with a Romanian paper Ring.

“It’s close to Arsenal, we’ll see this week. Marica is a very good striker, Romanian national player that has experienced great football in the West.’s normal to be targeted by big clubs, the more that remained free after having concluded the contract with Schalke 04” Becali said. Arsenal’s lack of activity has worried fans again this summer, as manager Arsene Wenger targets another ‘cheap’ forward.

The Gunners have sold forward Gervinho to Roma this summer, with no replacement brought in thus far, and fellow frontmen Nicklas Bendtner, Park Chu-Young and Lukas Podolski have all be linked with moves away this summer, and Marica has been lined up as a target this summer should one of the aforementioned players be sold.

Having missed out on Stevan Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain already this summer, the Gunners are desperate to spend money on squad improvements so they can again challenge for the title. They have lined up a move for young Real Betis winger Alvaro Vadillo as a replacement for Gervinho.

Since moving to Germany Marica has managed a very sedate Bendtner-esque strike rate, netting 39 times 185 appearances including just five goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances since signing for Schalke in July 2011.
