Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has said that Luis Suarez would be the perfect signing for the club this summer but has stated that the squad will be strong enough to compete for the title whether he signs or not, Sky Sports reports.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with the Liverpool forward this summer and have made a bid of £40 million and £1 in order to activate a clause in his contract that many had thought would allow him to open talks with the London club, but Liverpool have rejected the bid and proceedings now threaten to boil over into a saga.

Suarez has made his desire to leave Merseyside very public, citing broken promises from Brendan Rodgers.

And though Walcott himself is eager to play in a more central role, chances of which would be greatly reduced should the Uruguayan arrive at the club this summer, he would still welcome the chance to play alongside him, but also went on to say that Arsene Wenger’s men would do just fine even if Suarez didn’t make it to the Emirates.

“If he (Suarez) comes, great,” Walcott said.

“Even if we stay as we are now, we are a great team and we showed that in the last 10 games last season. We just need to do that a bit more on a consistent level at the start of this year but every player who is at Arsenal is a top-class player.

“You’re not going to get an average player come to Arsenal, I think that every player that is here is a top-class player. The boss has believed in so many players he has brought in and they have done so well.”
