500,000 fans salute their hero

Half a million fans took to the streets of the town of Jesolo, to celebrate the Italian superstar’s homecoming.

A parade was held and the 38-year-old became the first sportsman to have his feet pressed into Jesolo’s Walk of Stars, the Italian version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

After a parade through the town, in scenes more akin to a rock star than a footballer, the striker spent an hour with fans in a the back of a Rolls Royce and then had a street named after him.

All this glamour was in the midst of Sydney’s pre-season tour, they resume normal duties tomorrow with a match against Vicenza Calcio.

The Sky Blues then take on A.S. Cittadella on Wednesday.

Speaking to Football Australia, Sydney Defender Pascal Bosschaart was overawed with the sheer adoration that Del Piero receives from his home fans.

“To see Alessandro receive the honour of having a street named after him was amazing for me and the rest of the boys lucky enough to be there.

“It is amazing to witness how the people of Italy love him and respect him and we are lucky enough to play football with him.”
