The defender has looked likely to leave Ajax all summer and now a move to Atletico Madrid looks almost certain.

Check in to Transfer Window: Done Deal Alerts

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has said that he expects to complete his move to Atletico Madrid before the transfer window closes on Monday, Sky Sports reports.

The 24 has been linked with several clubs this summer but admitted that when Atletico made him an offer, it was too good to turn down.

“At Atletico there is a four-year deal waiting for me. The deal is not complete yet as I still have a medical test,” he told De Telegraaf.

“I expect this will be today and after it we can work out some details.

“Everyone knows I wanted to make the next step. When a club like Atletico shows up you are always willing to listen.

“Negotiations have started and I will be relieved when they succeed.”

Many pundits thought that Alderweireld would move away from Ajax at some point this summer due to the fact that he only has one year remaining on his contract with the Dutch giants.

The defender joined Ajax in 2004 and has made 186 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals.

After such a long occasion with Ajax, Alderweireld admits it will be tough to leave the Dutch giants behind.

“I look back with a fantastic feeling on my time at Ajax. I spent a big part of my youth here.

“This club will always be in my heart. Many see that, but only a few are at the same club for a long time. I am very grateful.”

Alderweireld had been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with Tottenham, Liverpool and Norwich City all thought to be interested in the Belgian defender.

However, Atletico look to have won the race to sign one of Europe’s most highly rated defenders.
