Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised in-form midfielder Aaron Ramsey for his recent performances and putting his horror injury of 2010 behind him, Sky Sports reports.
The 22-year-old’s career looked seriously threatened after a dangerous challenge from Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross broke his leg in a match at the Britannia Stadium towards the end of the 2009/10 season, just as Ramsey had started to establish himself as a first-team regular for the Gunners.
It has taken some time for Ramsey to fully recover from the injury, though the Welshman has started this season in fine form, scoring six goals in his first seven games in all competitions, currently making him the team’s top scorer.
Wenger believes he has improved a great deal, and has given the player credit for dealing with his problems, as he admitted he was a little more anxious about going in for challenges for a long time after his clash with Shawcross.
“It took him a long time to get completely over that, especially in duels, in fights (for the ball). He was resistant to go into the fights for a long, long time but now he’s over it,” the Frenchman explained.
“He had a difficult period last season where people became a little bit impatient with him. He lost confidence and sometimes, if you give the players a little rest, it can rebuild their confidence.
“They can think about their game and come back stronger and that’s what happened to him.
“He has a great engine, a great spirit and has an obsession, he always wants to be better. That is, of course, a very good ingredient.”
Ramsey has always been a highly rated prospect, having joined Arsenal from Cardiff City for £4.8m when he was just 17 years old, when the likes of Everton and Manchester United were also said to be chasing him.
