Gunners in fight for talented Basel youngster.
Arsenal will face competition from Italian giants Juventus for the signing of highly-rated FC Basel defender Fabian Schar, according to Inside Futbol.
The 21-year-old looks a great prospect after some strong displays for the Swiss side last season, which have also seen him earn a call-up to the senior national team, for whom he has three caps and three goals.
Arsenal were linked with a number of centre-backs over the summer due to being somewhat short of options in that position, with concerns that the out-of-form Thomas Vermaelen may not be enough in the way of backup to current first-choice pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
Right-back Bacary Sagna has had to fill in in the middle at points this season, and Arsene Wenger will be hoping to address this issue when the transfer window re-opens in January, as he failed to bring in the likes of Ashley Williams or Admil Rami during the summer.
However, Juventus will provide some stiff competition to the Gunners, with the Serie A champions keen to continue building a strong team capable of challenging for the Champions League this season.
Basel will be keen not to lose another key player and promising youngster, however, as they sold Austrian defender Aleksandar Dragovic to Dynamo Kiev over the summer.
