Arsenal could be close to securing the permanent signing of Bristol Rovers youngster Matt Macey after the goalkeeper impressed on trial with the club, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 18-year-old looks an outstanding prospect in the long term for Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger is keen to bring him to the Emirates Stadium on a permanent deal after taking him on a trial period.

With the likes of Wojciech Szczesny, Lukasz Fabianski and loan signing Emiliano Viviano all currently providing firm competition for places at Arsenal, it is unlikely that Macey would become part of the first-team picture in the near future, though Wenger sees potential in the young shot-stopper to make an impact at the club one day.

Arsenal have been known for snapping up the best young talent around the world and giving a chance to players to develop at the club, though with mixed success as they are currently on a run of eight years without winning a trophy.

The Gunners could still move for a big-name goalkeeper next summer, as some questions remain over the consistency and attitude of current first-choice Szczesny, with the likes of Iker Casillas being linked to the club in recent times.
