Youngster, who can operate in both the centre and right-hand side of the back four, has a contract with the Swiss champions that runs out in 2015.
North-London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will go head to head in the battle to sign in-demand FC Basel centre-back Fabian Schar as soon as the winter transfer window opens again for business at the turn of the year, according to reports in the Sunday Mirror.
It has long been known that the current Premier League leaders have been interested in the versatile Switzerland international, especially after Gunners head coach Arsene Wenger sent scout Neil Banfield over to St. Jakob-Park to watch Schar in action on several occasions.
However, Arsenal now face a fight to be able to land the 21-year-old in the new year after Tottenham director of football Franco Baldini was also spotted in the crowd at Basel on Tuesday night as the Swiss champions played host to Chelsea in their Uefa Champions League group-stage fixture.
And the Italian cannot have failed to be impressed with Schar’s eye-catching display at the back as Spurs continue their search for a new central defender, with Basel completing a memorable double over the Uefa Europa League holders with their second straight 1-0 win.
As a result, it now looks as though both London giants will move for the £10 million-rated Swiss in January.
