The Spaniard is currently on a season long loan with Serie A side Napoli and he has made no secret of his desire to return to the club where his career began all those years ago after a proposed move over the summer failed to materialise.

But the deal’s collapse has not meant that he has given up hope on being able to secure a return as the Spanish champions continue their search for a replacement to Victor Valdes, who still intends to exit the club at the end of his current deal in July.

“I would love to return to Barcelona. To play at Barca is a privilege, but I imagine that my name is on a list with others.

“Barca is a top club and Victor Valdes’ departure will have alerted other candidates so a return will be very difficult.

“Right now I’m not thinking about it. I was fortunate to play there once and I consider myself privileged to have done that. The important thing is that I continue to do well at Napoli.”

Barca were believed to have lined up a move for Borussia Monchengladbach youngster Marc-Andre Ter Stegen but Reina is still very much on the shortlist. He is, however, unlikely to return to Liverpool following Simon Mignolet’s arrival during the pre-season period.
