Walcott suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee during his side’s 2-0 FA Cup win over arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend and will now undergo surgery that will rule him out for the rest of the campaign as well as the World Cup in June.

The Gunners ace twisted his knee in an innocuous looking tackle toward the end of the game and did not appear to be in any serious pain as he was stretchered off, and was even well enough to wind up Spurs fans by flashing a 2-0 hand gesture towards them.

The club said on their official website: “Theo will have surgery in London in the near future and is expected to be out for at least six months, therefore missing the remainder of the season and the World Cup in Brazil in the summer.

“Everyone at Arsenal wishes Theo a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back on a football pitch as soon as possible.”
