Liverpool have been given renewed hope in their long-running efforts to sign highly rated young FC Barcelona defender Martin Montoya after the Spaniard revealed that he is no great hurry to put pen to paper on a new deal with the La Liga champions amid renewed interest in the player from the Merseyside giants, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The Reds have been scouting the right back for some time now in the hope of being able to lure Montoya to Anfield, either on loan during the January transfer window or on a permanent deal come the end of this campaign.

The former Spain Under-23 international has once largely found himself warming the substitutes’ bench at Camp Nou so far this season under new Barca head coach Tata Martino, so much so that the full back is said to now be seriously considering his long-term future at the club.

In total, the 22-year-old has featured in just the 13 matches in all competitions for Barcelona, although just nine of those have come in La Liga, and with Montoya’s current contract in Catalunya now set to run out next June, Montoya will be available to purchase on a free transfer next summer, with the player himself saying on the matter:  “There is no hurry for me to sign a new deal.

“I believe that the negotiations are on the way but without pressure.”

Meanwhile the Spaniard’s agent, Maria Orobitg, also told Tutto Mercato: “At the moment, everything is stopped [regarding a renewal with Barcelona].

“Possible future in Italy for Montoya? Every day I have to clarify the situation of Martin, who has been requested by three clubs in Serie A. He also has enquiries from other major European leagues.”
