Anfield side chase former hero.
Liverpool are planning an audacious move to re-sign tough tackler Javier Mascherano as Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers seeks to strengthen his squad ahead of a Champions League assault next season.
CaughtOffside understands that the Merseyside club have entered informal talks with the 29 year old Argentine and are ready to make an offer of around €20m (£16m), which Barcelona may well be tempted to accept as they look to re-shuffle their squad.

Clearly any move for Mascherano will only become an option if the La Liga side successfully appeal against the transfer ban handed down by FIFA though Barcelona are quietly confident they can overturn the ruling with a financial penalty proving a more likely sanction placed on the Nou Camp club.
Rodgers is keen to bring in top quality additions as Liverpool prepare to make their long awaited return to Champions League action and believes he can convince Mascherano to return to the club he represented for four seasons.
Mascherano has been used as a makeshift centre-back in recent seasons and the tigerish midfielder’s ability to play in multiple positions is part of the reason Rodgers is ready to make his interest in the Barcelona star known.
Currently Liverpool have to depend on injury prone Brazilian Lucas Leiva to provide steel in the centre of the park and with the club’s back-line also proving very leaky this term the Northern Irish boss believes Mascherano can, if needed, fill two ‘problem areas’ as and when required.
The former fan favourite may well be tempted by a move back to a Liverpool side who are looking increasingly like potential Premier League title winners.
