Napoli manager Rafael Benitez could be ready to take a gamble on the free transfer of former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 31-year-old, who started his career at Arsenal, is a free agent this summer after being released by Premier League side Stoke City, and is known for being held back throughout his career by various off-the-pitch difficulties and disciplinary problems.

Still, Pennant found some of the best form of his career under Benitez during his time at Liverpool, and notably gave a man-of-the-match display for the club during their 2007 Champions League final defeat to AC Milan.

Napoli are now keeping an eye out for new signings in the wide areas as they face strong interest from Arsenal in Italian attacker Lorenzo Insigne, and Benitez could make Pennant one of the surprise transfers of the summer by offering him a contract at the Stadio San Paolo.

The Serie A giants have also been linked with big names such as Tottenham Hotspur forward Erik Lamela, but Pennant’s availability on a free has seemingly made him a tempting option for Benitez.

Pennant has played abroad before, spending a season with Real Zaragoza in-between spells at Portsmouth and Stoke.
