French champions Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as the favourites to land Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, should Blues manager Jose Mourinho elect to make Thibaut Courtois his number one stopper.
TalkSPORT have reported that PSG are ready to offer Cech a return to France, ten years after he left former club Rennes for Stamford Bridge. The Czech, 32, who is approaching 500 games for the London club, has also been linked with numerous clubs, including Premier League duo Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
However, PSG are likely to be Cech’s preferred destination, should he indeed lose his place in the Chelsea team to 22-year-old Belgian Courtois, who has spent the last three seasons on loan at Spanish champions Atletico Madrid. The French side will be able to offer Champions League football, and would also be able to reunite the goalkeeper with his former Chelsea team-mate David Luiz – who moved to Paris earlier this month.
Courtois, who is currently starring for his country at the World Cup, helped Atletico capture the La Liga title earlier this year, and also came within mere moments of winning the Champions League before he was beaten by Sergio Ramos’ late strike, and Real Madrid’s subsequent comeback. He ironically played for Madrid in both legs of their semi-final against his parent club Chelsea, fuelling speculation that he could be on the verge of a permanent move to the Vicente Calderon.
However, Mourinho now seems extremely keen on finally giving the youngster his chance in a Chelsea shirt, leaving the long-serving Cech surplus to requirements.
Belgium manager Mark Wilmots agreed with the speculation, commenting: “Yes, he [Courtois] will be returning to Chelsea this summer. Will they sell Cech? Yes, probably.”
